What to Expect
Thank you for considering a career with the New York City Police Department. We will assist you with completing the screening process in an efficient and timely manner. We look forward to having you join the NYPD Team. Here are a few things that may help you throughout the process:
- Screening Process and Medical Exam: During the Screening Process, you will be fingerprinted and have your photo taken. The Medical Exam portion of the process is conducted by a team of professionals at our facility and consists of an overall physical exam, an EKG, blood pressure exam, a vision test and a hearing test. You should bring documentation regarding preexisting conditions (ex. Diabetes, surgeries, etc.), if applicable.
- Initial Interview with Investigator: At the completion of your Screening Process and Medical, you will be assigned an Investigator and given their contact information (phone/email). Use this information to contact your investigator and schedule an interview with him/her. From this point on, your investigator will be your contact person for any questions/concerns you may have about your processing. At your interview, this is the time to present yourself in a positive manner. Be courteous and professional. Your interview is a good time to ask any questions you may have pertaining to your title (example – training, salary, probationary period, sick leave, schedules, requirements, etc.). It is crucial that you bring all requested paperwork to your investigator. Any delay in the submission of your paperwork, can result in a delay in your hire. It is very important that you and your investigator work together as a team.
- Forms: All required forms needed for your initial interview and processing are located on the NYPD Candidate Portal at https://candidate.nypdonline.org. The Portal will display a list of forms and documents that you MUST have prepared for your initial interview. Follow the instructions and prepare the forms electronically. If you have any questions regarding the completion of these forms, contact your Investigator, or the Candidate Relations Section at 718-312-4226 or email cad@nypd.org.
- Psychological Exam: There are two parts to this test; a written part and an oral part. Both the written and oral tests are conducted at our facility. The written test consists of true/false questions and takes approximately 5-6 hours to complete. The oral part is scheduled once a candidate completes the written exam. This part consists of a one-on-one interview with a psychologist.
- Job Standard Test (JST): This is an agility/physical task test conducted by the Physical Assessment Unit in the gymnasium at the Candidate Assessment Center.
